Clinical Aspects of Lung Cancer

Abstract
It is a general observation that carcinoma of the lung seems to be increasing in frequency in most part of the world. From Korea. however, only very little has been reported so far on the problem of lung cancer. Author attempted to carry out a series of c1inical investigation of lung cancer in korean who was admitted to chest medical department, the National Medical Center during the period of first three years (group one) from soon after the opening the hospital in 1958 to 1961 and last six years(group two) from 1967 to 1972. 1. The subjects were 63 cases(49 male and 14 female) in group one and 98 cases (74 male and 24 female) in group two. 2. The peak incidence of lung cancer were 50 years of age group and the youngest patient was 29 years old and the oldest patient was 74 years of age. 3. The sex distribution there being a man: woman ratio of 3.5:1 in group one and 3.0:1 in group two. 4. The smokers were affected 2. 4 time higher than the nonsmokers 5. The relationship with dust, there was more lung cancer in dust1ess occupation. 6. Cough, chest pain, dyspnea and bloody sputum were the most frequent initial symptoms. 7. The average duration symptoms from onset to diagnosis were 6.8 months. 8. Surgery was performed on 25 cases. 9. Initial diagnosis were variously, among which pulmonary tuberculosis was most predominant. 10. Direct finding of bronchoscope was 60. 6 percent. 11. Study on the method of diagnosis revealed that intrabronchial biopsy (54. 6%), prescalene biopsy (37. 0%) and sputum cytology (31. 0%). 12. There is a preponderance of squamous cel1 carcinoma (41. 2%). epidermoid cell carcinoma (32.4%) and adenocarcinoma (20. 6%) in this series. Anaplastic carcinoma was found in only 5.8 percent.
