Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ethambutol on the plasma glucose level of the unanesthized hen in both in vivo and in vitro experiments.
Intravenous administration of ethambutol over the dose of 100 mg per kilogram of body weight elevated the plasma glucose level. Hyperglycemic effect of ethambutol was not inlluemed by epinephrin-einduced hy perglycemia, or regitine-, ergotamine-, alderlin-, and reserpinepretreatment.
Alloxan-pretreatment and pancreatic ligation did not influence to ethambutol-induced hyperglycemia.
Ethambutol increased the release of glucose from the hen liver slices, but did not affect the glycogen content of the isolated hen diaphragms in vitro.
From the above results, it is suggested that hyperglycemic effect of large doses of intravenous ethambutol is due to the direct glycogenolytic action on the liver of the hen. |
