Abstract
In initial anti-tuberculosis treatment isoniazid, PAS and streptomycin is most common combination, and it may be desirable to ensure that PAS is taken when prescribed. We observed and analyzed with ferric chloride method for demonstration of PAS in the 546 urine of 220 pulmonary tuberculosis cases prescribed PAS who were hospitalized to the National Masan Tuberculosis Hospital from January to September in 1977. The percentage of patients with negative urine P AS tests was 15.9 percent. Sex and age distribution of 220 patients in this study was 156 males and 64 females , the peak was 20-29 years of age group in both sex. The youngest in the group was 11 and the oldest 80. The higher negative reactors were 11-19 years 18.2% , 20-29 years 18.4% , and male 18. 6% female 9.4%. Also negative rates were higher in patients with less extensive disease (minimal 21. 1%, M-A 16-6% and F-A 12.5%), short duration of illness (less than one month 28.2%), sputum positive group (18.8%) but negative rates decreased with the length of time that PAS was prescribed previously. It is really alarming that 16 out of 100 in-patients for whom PAS has been prescribed were taking the drug in an irregular fashion, they often do not take PAS because of gastro-intestinal symptoms or other trouble. There are serious risk to the patient and his environment in the indiscriminate use of antituberculosis drugs, and if misuse continue for some more years, it may be come difficult to organize an effective individual and public health tuberculosis programme.
