Abstract
Needle biopsy of the peritoneum using Cope biopsy needle was performed on 78 cases with ascites due to various causes, from Dec., 1970 to Oct., 1974 at the Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital. There were no serious complications due to peritoneal biopsy performed in the left lower quadrant. The correct diagnosis was made in 75 % of patients with tuberculous peritonitis and 37% of those with malignant ascites. Nonspecific pathological findings, however, could not rule out malignancy or tuberculosis. A diagnostic approach is suggested incorporating needle biopsy of the peritoneum that should allow for the establishment of the diagnosis of undiagnosed exudative ascites.
