Abstract

Thirty-two cases with lung cancers were found in 4286 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during the period from January 1979 to August 1988. The clinical characteristics reviewed from clinical charts were as follows; 1) There were 28 males and 4 females whose ages ranged from 48 to 80 years with mean age of 61 years. 2) Among the 32 cases, 24 cases (75%) had active pulmonary tuberculosis. 3) The chief complaints at the admission were cough with expectoration, dyspnea, chest pain, bloody sputum or hemoptysis, and weight loss in the order of decreasing frequency. 4) The chest x-ray findings of lung cancers were mass shadow (50%), homogeneous density (38%), hilar enlargement (22%), pleurisy finding (19%), and collapse (9%). 5) Histologic confirmation of the lung cancers was made from bronchoscopic biopsy in 53% of cases. 6) The histologic types of the lung cancer were squamous cell carcinoma (72%), small cell car. cinoma (13%), adenocarcinoma (9%), and large cell carcinoma (6%). 7) The most common location of the lung cancers was central portion of middle lung field (34%). 8) Distant metastases were noted in 14 cases (44%), most prevalent in the Iymphnodes. 9) In view of stage of lung cancer, non-small cell cancer was almost in the stage III and IV (78.6%), while small cell carcinoma was almost in the extensive type (75%).
