Pulmonary Epithelial Permeability in Patients with Acute Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

Abstract
In order to invsetigate the effect of carbon monoxide on pulmonary epitheilum, we measured the concentration of carbon monoxide in expiratoy gas and the pulmonary epithelial permeability using 99mTc-DTPA in 10 patients with acute carbonmonxide intoxication and 10 normal volunteers. The results were as follows: 1) The half-life of radioisotopes of right upper and right lower lobe in patients with acute carbon monxication were 45.3± 10.8 minutes and 46.9± 0.5 minutes which were not different from 40.6± 6.8 minutes and 42.3± 5.9 minutes in normal volunteers. 2) The concentration of carbon monoxide in expiratory gas in patients with acute carbon monoxide intoxication was significantly higher than that of normal volunteers (200.8±103.7 PPM vs 35.0±26. 5 PPM, p<0.01). 3) There was no correlation between the concentration of carbon monoxide in expiratory gas and the half-life of radilisotopes of right upper and right lower lobe in patients with acute carbon monxide intoxication and normal volunteers. 4) There was no correlation between the half-life of radioisotopes of right upper and right lower lobe and taken time which was the interval from the exposure of carbon monoxide to time of measurement of epithelial permeability. In conclusion, there was no increase of pulmonary epithelial permeability in patients with acute carbon monoxide intoxication, but the time from the exposure of carbon monoxide to the time of the measurement of epithelial permeability may affect pulmonary epithelial permeability.
