Abstract
Solitary pulmonary nodules found on chest radiographs were assessed in 63 cases for prevalence of malignancy based on their sizes, the ages of patients, smoking history, and lobar locations Out of 63 cases, 33 were malignant and the remainder was benign. The commonest lesions of benign and malignant nodules were tuberculosis and squamous cell carcinoma, respectively. The mean diameters of benign and malignant lesions were not significantly different. The mean ages of the patients with benign and malignant nodules were 37 and 55 years, respectively, and the malignant nodules had a striking propensity to increase with ages. No significant difference in the smoking history was noted between benign and malignant groups although smokers were more often in patients with malignant nodules The lobar distribution of nodules was not related to etiology of the lesion.
