Abstract
pH, PC02 LDH, glucose, protein and white cell counts in pleural fluids and sera were measured from 26 patients of tuberculous pleurisy with effusion and 5 patients of lung cancer with effusion to differenciate them admitted to Chonbuk National University Hospital from October 1984 to January 1987. The results were as follows. 1) In all cases the ratio of LDH in pleural fluid to LDH in serum was above 0.6 and that of protein in pleural fluid to protein in serum was above 0.5. 2) pH and PC02 in pleural fluids were inversely related in tuberculous pleurisy patients (r=0.96 P < 0.01). 3) pH in pleural f1uid and the ratio of glucose concentration in pleural fluid to glucose concentration in serum were related in tuberculous pleurisy patients (r=0.63 P < 0.01). 4) pH and white cell counts in pleural fluid were related inversely in tuberculous pleurisy patients (r=-0.86 P<0.01). 5) pH in pleural fluid between tuberculous pleurisy patients and lung cancer patients was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). 6) pH and PC02 between in pleural fluid and in arterial blood were statistically significant in same tuberculous pleurisy patients (each P < 0.01 , P <0.05, Table 3-1) According to above results we suggest that to measure pH and PC02 in pleural fluid and arterial blood of the same tuberculous pleurisy patients is helpful to diagnose the tuberculous pleurisy.
