Result of Negative Conversion for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients at Sanatorium

Abstract
We studied 202 pulmonary tuberculosis patients who were admitted and ambulatory at our Sanatorium with sputum culture positive prior to treatment and divided according to smear negative culture positive (S-C+) prior to treatment and smear positive-culture positive status during treatment.
Results
revealed as follows; 1) prior to treatment, sputum conc-smear negative-culture positive (S-C+) were present in 16.8%, whereas smear negative-culture positive (S-C+) presented 38.6% in patients with minimal disease and 5.3% with far advanced cavitary diseases. 2) During treatment, S+C- phenomenon was presented in 28.6% and 40% in patients with far advanced cavitary diseases, but it was proportionate to size of cavity and extent of disease, here was highly present in patients whose treatment regimen included rifampicin. 3) Sputum culture conversion rate was the most rapid (100% within 3 months) in patients with SC+, and the lowest rates of converting sputum culture to negative (60%) in S+C+ patient were found in those with far advancded cavitary disease within 3 months. 4) Drug resistant organisms appeared in 23% in proportion to cavity or not and extent of disease, and primary drug resistent rate was found in 37.1 % with far advanced cavitary diseases.
