Abstract
The aspiration biopsy of the parietal pleura as an aid tn the etiologic diagnosis of pleural effusion performed in 40 cases during Sept.1958 to Aug. 1959. 1) Results of 40 pleural biopsies are reported and compared with the other available diagnostic methods including chemical, cytologic and bacteriologic analysis of fluid. 2) In 40 cases in which this procedure was utilized, diagnostic tissue was obtained in 72. 5 per cent and specific diagnosis in 52. 5 per cent. 3) The aspiration biopsy was of considerable value in a group of patient classified clinically as “ undeterminate", giving a definite tissue diagnosis per cent. 4) In 17 cases with pleural effusion suspected of tuberculous, aspiration biopsy of the parietal pleura diagnostic tissue was obtained in 47 per cent. 5) The literature on pleural biopsy has been briefly reviewed and summary of previously reported results are compared with our results. 6) There is definite need for additional diagnostic procedure to estabilish the etiology of pleural effusion. 7) The aspiration biopsy of the parietal pleura is a safe, easy and accurate method and may be considerably valuable in obtaining an early diagnosis.
